Brevity is the soul of wit. I think it was a mistake for him both to try to make this many jokes at the same time and to call out the jokes a la Tom Tomorrow or something. Dude, it’s a funny image - don’t try to explain it in case anybody didn’t get it.

Yes. Johnny Carson was an absolute genius at getting a laugh out of a joke that bombed. Leno tells a funny joke but just keeps talking. Fallon does it too, to an extent. You don’t have to re-enact your joke. Just tell the story and trust that your audience will get it.

Rip Taylor had something of a schtick in that way - being jokey about his own bad jokes. Then MST3k did a parody of him... which is a joke about joking about your own jokes. Too many layers, you would think...
